Denying My Grief
Awareness Exercise: We all deny aspects of our grief. Most often we do this because we are afraid of being judged or misunderstood and because of old belief systems that were programmed from childhood. For many of us, those around us just don’t seem interested in our stories about losing our mum and they certainly are not interested in our feelings.
Consequently, this leaves us with no other choice than to deny our grief in the presence of those around us and we feel more isolated and alone.

Using your journal
I want you to make a list of all the things that you deny yourself when it comes to your grief. Once you have made your list, I want you to read over it and become aware of what you feel in your body and what thoughts arise and make notes of these in your journal.
Example 1: I denied myself of speaking about my mum to my friends because when I have talked about her in the past, they change the subject or appear to be disinterested.
Example 2: I deny my grief by returning to work and just getting on with my life. It seems easier than having to deal with my pain.
Example 3: I deny my feelings because they hurt too much and I just can’t cope with them.
